ELVIRA AMOR, MAR CUBERO Y SERGIO DOMINGUEZ WINNERS OF THE 3RD ARTELATERAL – OPEN STUDIO AWARD AIMED AT PROMOTING ARTISTIC CREATION
For the third year running, ArteLateral and Open Studio have joined forces to present three awards for artistic creation. Endowed with €1,500 gross each, the awards also provide the opportunity to exhibit proposals at Lateral’s venues in Madrid. The following have been selected from among the participating artists, all of whom had participated on one of the four previous editions of Open Studio Madrid: Elvira Amor, who will exhibit in Lateral Arturo Soria, Mar Cubero, in Lateral Velázquez, and Sergio Domínguez, in Lateral Santa Ana.
The site-specific projects will be on exhibition from the end of October and can be visited until the beginning of February 2018. ArteLateral and Open Studio have joined together to create an award which helps to fulfil one of their main objectives: the education and artistic training of new audiences by means of the strengthening of cultural networks, a goal which they share and which is reflected in the creation of this award. Open Studio shows the work of the artist in his or her studio to the public and ArteLateral exhibits it in a space outside the usual circuits of contemporary art.
ELVIRA AMOR IN LATERAL ARTURO SORIA
Elvira Amor’s proposal consists of the arrangement of a series of wall paintings and a set of serigraphs.
“The work consists of an abstract painting composed of a language of soft forms and geometries which generate tensions and movements between themselves by means of washes which I apply to the cloth in unique gestures to cause expansions and filtrations between colours and forms. The mixing of different colours when they are still wet leaves its mark on the painting by accentuating the material state and the process. There is content in the material state of the painting, in the treatment and the colour, which is related to a non-verbal communication, associated with the senses, to a more primary state, before language. My painting is filled with impressions within forms, with atmospheres. It is absorbed by the threads of the canvas, thereby creating translucent layers, pregnant figures superimposed in intense sensations of colour.”
MAR CUBERO IN LATERAL VELÁZQUEZ
The artist presents a series of collages each measuring 21cm x 30cm and made of strips of wood on MDF. Each of them works both individually and as part of a polyptych. These collages will be installed in the space in such a way as to create small groups.
“In my works, the units are determined according to modules; I look for the possible variations of the same figure by means of the repetition of a lesser form. I am interested in working from the starting point of small pieces (in this case strips of wood) which, when joined and combined, create a new object. Through the use of repetition and a range of compositional exercises, these smaller pieces complement each other and are transformed into whole objects.”
SERGIO DOMÍNGUEZ LOEDA IN LATERAL SANTA ANA
“The mechanics of a bottle came about as a result of an experiment with materials related to typography and Chinese calligraphy, a concept which tends to be present in my work, the low-weight paper which is always present in my studio for various reasons and the aim of distancing myself from canvas and paint as a medium beginning to use the paper as an end in itself. What I want to do is develop a working methodology whereby I cease to control exactly what is happening on the medium how the colour spreads itself by means of patterns constructed previously. The only thing I end up being aware of is the use of one or another colour on the paper. To reach this point, I have experimented with various recycled material, such as cartons, tubes, masking tape, plaster, bin liners, creating machines which are capable of generating these patterns on the paper”.
The result of this experimentation has given rise to a series of highly organic images with which the artist will paper the walls of the space at Lateral Santa Ana.
